Leeds Laces FC Six-Goal Thriller with Wetherby Athletic JFC Women on our Competitive Debut

Leeds Laces FC first ever competitive fixture delivered everything this debut could have asked for, with a 3-3 draw with Wetherby Athletic JFC Women which had everyone on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Leeds Laces started strong, with our first ever competitive goal scored by Katie Watson in the 14th minute from a remarkable free kick from the corner flag, which skipped past everyone and slotted right into the back of the net. Leeds Laces FC’s first ever goal could not have been scripted better!

Wetherby shortly followed to level our scores, but Leeds Laces did not stay behind for long as Cory Mercer picked up Leeds Laces second when her initial shot was saved by the keeper, falling onto her right foot and sent straight to the back of the net.

Leeds Laces FC went into half-time 2-1 up, poised and focused.

The second half started strong as Justyna Bielska ran directly at the keeper with the ball, who came off her line in an attempt to shut her down, but missed as Justyna continued powering towards the goal confidently slotting our third of the day home, making the scoreline 3-1.

Wetherby Athletic were far from finished though, as they quickly pulled back two goals in quick succession levelling our match 3-3 with 5 minutes still to play.

The final five minutes were incredibly tense. Leeds Laces FC had given their all and were drawing on everything within to hold their opponents at bay as Wetherby Athletic rode their momentum. Some final attacks from both teams left everywhere on the edge of their seats until the whistle blew for full time.

Leeds Laces FC first ever competitive game lived up to all expectations. Every single player gave 100% effort, and we could not be prouder. For a squad where this was many of the players first ever competitive outing the three goals scored, as well as leading for the majority of the match is a real statement of intent for what is to come for Leeds Laces FC first competitive season.

This week’s Player of the Match Award, as presented by HANS Global Security Group was split three ways with Jenny, Noor and Fely all recognised for their momentous performances. Huge congratulations to all three.

Massive thanks to Foudys for kitting our team up for today’s game while we wait for our home kits to arrive, and to Brewery Wharf Tavern for hosting everyone afterwards.

Big shoutout to all our supporters who came down and watched, your support is hugely appreciated and did not go unnoticed.
