Leeds Laces FC Fall to Kellingley Welfare FC away
Last Sunday, Leeds Laces travelled away to take on Kellingley Welfare FC Women's Firsts, and even though the scoreline was tough, the effort and spirit were there from the very first whistle to the last.
We came out strong. Both wings tracked back and burst forward, and the quick feet of Noor, Katie and Neve lifted the whole team, opening up space and giving us chances to break. When Katie was fouled, Neve stepped up and sent the free kick just over the bar. It was close, and for a good spell we had them worried.
Towards the end of the first half, tired legs and a game getting more physical by the minute pushed us back, and we went in at the break four down. Rachel kept us in it with a string of fantastic saves, including one fingertip stop that sent the ball over the bar.
She stayed commanding after the break, fearless in claiming contested balls all over the box. At the other end, we kept creating. Noor whipped in some great crosses, Maisie caused trouble through the middle, and Noor had a shot on target that the keeper spilled wide.
Sadly, the game was called early after a late tackle on Noor out on the left. She had left her defender trailing yet again, and it seems that was the only way to stop her.
Despite the scoreline, our defence never stopped working. They covered for each other all game, held their shape and had each other's backs the whole way through. That's Laces togetherness in action.
It wasn't the result we wanted, but there was plenty to be proud of out there. We'll take the lessons, keep the spirit and go again. Focus turns to this Sunday as we take on Rothwell JFC at home, so get down to support us and bring the atmosphere!
Final score: Kellingley Welfare FC 7 - 0 Leeds Laces FC.
